Common Questions
Do I have to call and schedule a visit?
No! Guests are always welcome to show up and watch a class. If you feel more comfortable calling ahead, please do so and we will have an instructor ready to greet you.
What is a typical class like?
Each class is comprised of 3 phases: warmups, technique & drilling, and live sparring.
What should I wear to my first class?
Wear comfortable clothes to work out in, preferably gym shorts and a well-fitting t shirt or compression shirt. We also require no shoes be worn on the mats, this is to keep them clean and in good condition.
What should I expect on my first night?
On your first night you will go through warmups with everyone and then an instructor will go over a few fundamental movements and techniques with you to practice with a partner. Live sparring will follow instructions, but brand-new students do not need to participate if they are not comfortable.
Do I have to spar?
No, students will not be pressured into doing something they are not ready for. However, it is recommended students participate in sparring so they can learn proper movement and timing. Sparring is not something to fear, the goal of sparring is to refine technique and timing, it is not to hurt or knock out one another.
Will I be training alongside professional fighters?
Possibly! We have several amateur and professional fighters that regularly attend classes and sometimes help other students learn.
Do you have Gi and No Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes?
Yes, we offer both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. We provide an equal balance of training in both styles, ensuring our students develop a well-rounded skill set. We recommend always carrying your Gi with you for class and open mat.
What makes Sonic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA different?
What makes Sonic different is our family-like atmosphere, diverse membership, and a genuine passion for helping every student grow—on and off the mat.
How much do classes cost?
We have many different packages depending on how often you would like to train and what classes you would like to attend. When you come into your free intro class, we can provide you a breakdown of all the packages that we offer at Sonic for Individuals/Family.
Do I have to compete?
No, you are not required to compete. Most of our students sign up at Sonic to get in shape and learn a realistic self-defense system at the same time with no intentions to ever compete. There are also students that do want to compete. There are many local, state, national and international competitions to compete in each year. We have students that compete in both BJJ and MMA competitions throughout the year.
Do I have to be in shape to start classes?
Absolutely not. The number one reason why students begin their training with us is to get in shape and feel better. Come in and begin training no matter what your fitness level is. We are here to help you reach your fitness goals.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training safe?
While safety is paramount here at Sonic, accidents can happen, as in any other sport, but we pay close attention to safety and take extra precautions so that training is not only realistic but safe and enjoyable.
Am I too old or out of shape for martial arts?
No, we have students of all ages. If you are concerned you may be too out of shape, don’t worry, we will ease you into the program. The only way to improve your conditioning is to get started.
